Alumnus of SDU Wang Feige won 2019 NASA Hubble Fellow Award
[ Home ]Recently, NASA announced the list of 24 young scientists selected for the NASA Hubble Fellowship Program (NHFP) this year. 11 people were selected for Hubble Fellow, 7 were selected for Einstein Fellow, and 6 were selected for Sagan Fellow. Wang Feige, a 2008 undergraduate graduated from the Department of Space Science and Physics of Shandong University, Weihai, won the Hubble Fellow Award. Previously, Xu Siyao, a 2007 undergraduate graduated from the Basic class of the Department of Physics at Shandong University, was also selected for this honor in 2017. Both alumni went to the Department of Astronomy of Peking University to pursue postgraduate studies after graduating from Shandong University.
Hubble Fellow is an international, prestigious and highly competitive post-doctoral award in astronomy and astrophysics. The number of winner is from 7 to 17 per year. Award winners are free to choose acooperationin the United States for postdoctoral research and NASA provides the full salary and research funding.
Wang Feige was a 2008 undergraduate student in the Department of Space Science and Physics. He has a strong interest in astronomical research during his study in Weihai. He has served as the chairman of the Astronomy Outreach and Research Association, and has organized and participated in various astronomical science activities. At the same time, he is the response person of Science and Technology Innovation Project for College Students.He was awarded the first level prize in the fourth and fifth university students' scientific research projects. His bachelor's thesis was awarded as the excellent bachelor thesis in Shandong Province in 2012. After graduating from Shandong University in 2012, he got the offer of Peking University as a test-free doctor candidate. He entered the Department of Astronomy of Peking University and studied for a doctoral degree at Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics. He has made outstanding achievements in the optical and near-infrared observation studies of high-redshift quasars in the distant universe, and discovered many high-redshift quasars. He is the second author of one Nature paper cooperated with Professor Wu Xuebing. He has published nearly 20 research papers in internationally renowned journals such as Nature, and won the first level prize of the Ministry of Education in Natural Science as the second winner. After receiving his Ph.D. from Peking University in 2017, Wang Feige went to the University of California, Santa Barbara for postdoctoral research, and achieved many internationally significant achievements in high redshift quasar observation research. It is understood that after obtaining Hubble Fellow, Wang Feige will go to University of Arizona to continue the observational research on the early high-red shift quasars and supermassive black holes in the universe.
