SDU Holds Press Conference on AMS Project

[ Home ]

On April 28th, SDU held a press conference on the AMS (Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer), an international science project headed by Nobel Laureate Samuel Chao Chung Ting. President Xu Xianming and Zhai Luning, Director General of the Department of Science and Technology of Shandong Province, were in attendance.
SDU Prof. Cheng Lin was thechief scientist of a thermal system research team that was part of the AMS Project. Prof. Lin's team solved the problem of controlling the temperature of an electriferous magnet (a main component of the AMS device) running in space. This is a historical achievement and outstanding contribution to a large-scale scientific experiment at the International Space Station (ISS).
On May 16th, the AMS device was loaded onto the last flight of the US Space Shuttle Endeavour. The space shuttle launched from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida and has now landed at the ISS. It is hoped that the AMS device will be able to detect antimatter and send data back to home laboratories.
