Flemming Besenbacher Employed as Adjunct Professor of SDU

Recently, the ceremony marking the employment of Flemming Besenbacher, foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor of Aarhus University in Denmark, as an adjunct professor of Shandong University was held at the Central Campus of SDU. Vice president of Shandong University Han Shenghao issued the letter of appointment to him. After the ceremony, academician Flemming Besenbacher delivered a speech entitled "Grand Challenges in the 21stCentury”.

In his talk, Flemming Besenbacher listed crises and challenges the world is currently facing, such as environmental pollution, energy depletion and healthcare. He highlighted the strategies and solutions of applying science and technology to solve current issues, and then he pushed forward "Education 4.0," a new educational idea in the field of engineering which holds that the development of engineering education in the future should be oriented towards solving global issues, breaking down major barriers and encouraging a new educational model of interdisciplinarity. In the Q&A session, teachers and students from the College of Chemistry had lively exchanges with the academician on their common interests.
Professor Flemming Besenbacher is a physical chemist. He was selected as an academician of the Danish Academy of Natural Sciences in 1996, academician of the Danish Academy of Science and Technology in 1997, academician of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters in 1998, and foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2013. His research fields cover many aspects of nanoscience and have profoundly influenced the study of surface physical chemistry. He has published over 700 academic papers so far, including 10 in Science and 20 in Nature and the Nature series. His academic papers have been cited over 34,500 times.

Flemming Besenbacher has long been committed to the development of China's science and technology. He won the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Friendship Award from the Chinese government and the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award of China due to his contribution to China's scientific development.
