Mr. Chan, with his constant financial support to his Alma Mater, always encourages both teachers and students to work harder by citing his rich experiences and credos. Such wise words and deeds form the “Wai Nam Spirit” that has become an essential part of the University’s campus culture, providing a model for both faculty and students.

Mr. Chan has won high acclaims from people across all walks of life because of his strong sense of responsibility to his hometown, the society and the country, his wise words and noble deeds, his passionate dedication and devotion, all of which derives from his great gratitude to his Alma Mater. President Chen further pointed out that all faculty, students and alumni (or Hanshi People) should learn and spread Mr. Chan’s spirit of to-be-the-best and entrepreneurship, remember their roots and never forget their hometowns and motherland, keep in mind the virtue of devotion; respect the Confucian culture of advocating literacy and education; and abide by the principles of loyalty and trust. The completion of the Statue itself will enrich the connotation of campus culture and inspire Hanshi People to spread Wai Nam Spirit further through hard work and endeavor by following the strategy and goals of “Five Focuses” put forward by the University Party Committee, with the ultimate aim of cultivating morally-intellectually-physically-and-aesthetically-sound successors to the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Dr. Chan Yau Nam, on behalf of Chan Wai Nam and his family, expressed thanks for the completion of the Statue, noting that his father has, throughout all his life, adhered to his teachers’ inculcation of dedication and gratitude. Dr. Chan hoped that the Statue will function as a model to inspire people to better spread Wai Nam Spirit. He urged students of HSNU to keep in mind their original aspirations by working harder so that they will be grateful to their Alma Mater and able to contribute their due part to the society.
